Natural Beauty Remedys

Here are some kitchen-beauty remedies I’ve personally tested and rate highly in terms of effectivity. I’ll go so far as saying they work better than stuff you can buy in the drugstore, so try them out!

Facial scrub: Finely ground coffee and olive oil

A teaspoonful of finely ground coffee (I use Great Taste) mixed with a dash of olive oil makes for a very good exfoliator. The coffee has just the right consistency for sloughing off old skin layers without scratching up your face. And as we all know, olive oil is a great emollient.
Another great thing about this scrub is the coffee leaves your skin extremely soft and even seems to clarify skin tone a bit. Other home scrubs that I’ve tried such as fresh tomatoes and brown sugar with olive oil do o.k. in terms of exfoliating yet have negative side effects to them. The acid of the tomatoes left my skin itchy and blotchy. The sugar/olive oil mixture felt like it was still there even after the third wash. Even oatmeal scrubs which I’ve read almost everywhere to be highly recommended proved to be mediocre.
The coffee/olive oil combination is the best as it leaves your scrubbed face not only feeling squeaky clean but also very refreshed - ready for the day - kinda like how a hot cup of joe gets me going in the morning.

Hair treatment: Vinegar and water

Mix 3 parts water with one part vinegar and drench your hair in the mixture for a few minutes before shampooing. By the way, try to keep it off your scalp as the smell takes a few days to disappear, despite religious washing.
This is the best hair treatment if you want to make your hair shinier and softer but haven’t the time or patience for other home remedies such as putting mayonnaise on your hair and leaving it overnight (ewwww). I guess part of what the vinegar does is it washes away the buildup in our hair from longtime use of shampoos/conditioners and the acid somehow polishes up the hair??? I dunno, heck, I’m a sociology major, I have no idea what I’m talking about here. But take my word for it, the vinegar-y smell is but a small trade-off for the benefits your hair’ll reap.

Deo-whitener: Calamansi

The lowly calamansi packs a double punch in terms of deodorizing and whitening problem body areas. If you’ve ever had trouble with smelly feet or underarms, swab some calamansi juice and leave on for at least ten minutes before bathing. Again, my uninformed guess is the acid works to kill off germs or bacteria that causes the smelliness and, as a plus, whitens too. Use as often as necessary, except of course when you have rashes or breaks in your skin.
